A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by TravelPod blogger Johnmiller titled “We’re in Kuala Lumpur – AGAIN” Johnmiller’s travel blog entry: “As we were planning on staying in Kuala Lumpur for a few days we decided to try and get our Vietnamese visas sorted whilst we’re here. Turns out though that the Chinese never do any thing by halves and so the coming of the year of the rooster entails pretty much the entire city including the travel agencies and the Vietnamese embassy closing down for a week. To say the least, this proved a little annoying. We didn’t really do much on our first day in KL. We had a wander around the Times Square Shopping Centre. This place is huge, if half empty – it has 10 floors, an indoor theme park and 2 cinemas. Above the 5th floor it’s pretty much empty though. We did manage to find the set of Malaysian Idol but perhaps luckily for the Malaysian TV audience we were too late to try out. We ended up going to the IMAX cinema and i know this may sound a bit sad but in 3D, ‘The Polar Express’ was actually really good! Next day and with everything still shut we made our way to the Lake Gardens. After a visit to the butterfly park we spent the afternoon in the planetarium. We managed to keep ourselves entertained for an entire afternoon with things like their blackhole room which uses optical illusions to shrink you – it was really strange seeing Steve looking like a midget! There’s still quite a bit of debate …

The flight did touch down in Nairobi for refuelling; and we chatted to a few of the Kenyan’s on the plane about the current tensions in the country; it seemed all was not quite as reported by the UK media. The violence has been contained within specific slum areas outside the capital, and for all intense and purposes, travel is resonably safe….just don’t go to those areas! The media do a fantastic job of embellishing situations; in Taiwan a few years ago I was watching CNN describing impending violence on the streets of Taipei due to tensions between mainland China and the island, however during my week there I never once encountered any sign of tension. News sells, and bad news sells even better. Our first night was a rough one. The hotel may of well have been called ‘mosquito pit’, the humidity was around 75% and I woke every 10 minutes thinking I was getting eaten alive; however with no bites in the morning, it seems my imagination was getting the better of me! A seven hour bus journey later, and I am in Moshi where Matt and I start our ascent of Kilimanjaro. The journey takes us from the slums of Dar Es Salaam through many landscape changing …
