The train itself was definitely a local. The standard and quality not at all what we had previously experienced on the luxurious fast train. The toilets, well let’s just say that the long drops at NZ camp grounds were probably cleaner and leave the explanation at that. The Provinistas on these trains were surprisingly warm and friendly even to the point of being helpful. It became apparent early on that it was indeed the slow train we had embarked on, due to the frequency of stops at the most small obscure places along the route. To top it off we even found ourselves waiting on a number of occasions for the fast trains to rush ahead of us… We did not take many supplies as we were under the illusion there would be a dining car on board. The Provinista had her own little enterprise selling noodles and pots of dried potato flakes so we did not starve and dried food never tasted so good. Several Chinese media reported recently that Liu had allegedly taken bribes of about 3 million yuan. Although this has not been officially confirmed, people in China expressed their disbelief. Liu was announced to have been sacked on Feb 13. The authorities didn’t disclose details of his violation. His corruption case is a focus of media and the public. On Feb. 20, several Chinese media reported that Liu’s received bribes were verified to be 3 million yuan. He received project kickbacks at a ratio of about 2.5%.
