Major progress seems to have been achieved in the last week or so, in that I actually managed to go out for dinner with some Chinese people and have something ressembling conversation (not stunningly interesting mind, but it was certainly something!). I also met up with some of the same people again later in the week and went to a party at one of their Japanese friend’s appartments and again managed to break out some of my finest Chinese sentences, so I do feel there is hope for me eventually… Among other things, from hanging out with these Chinese university students I seem to be getting a broader vocabulary of bizarre slang, including my particular favourite, the literal meaning of which is “to eat tofu” which apparently actually means to flirt with a girl, or at least, I think that’s what it means from the various bizarre attempts to illustrate it to me. Happily settled in the third room we headed to tourist information and got a map of the city. The man helping us was called Santiago and was very kind. He gave us his number in case we needed any help. We went to the mausoleum of Artigas which is in the main sqaure. It was huge and very modern. It was a massive room underneath a big statue and was completely empty apart from his ashes which sat in the middle and two very sleepy looking guards standing either side of it. Next stop was the National Museum of history which was very interesting. There we saw a painting of a mountain called ´Mount Video´ from which we assume the name Montevideo comes? Afterwards we walked down to the waterfront where the brown river water and blue sea water mixed and caused an interesting stripy sea effect before heading back into town …
