Cullum is from the Toronto area and has been living in Taiwan for about three years. He taught at an English school in Taipei for two years, and has been working at Cornel for one year. He is fluent in Chinese and has done a lot to show me the ropes around the neighborhood near my apartment building. Cullum is going to be returning to his home in Canada in the coming weeks to visit some family and friends. However, when he returns to the Far East, he will not be continuing his career as a teacher at Cornel. Rather, he will be living in a monastery in Thailand where he will be studying to become a Buddhist monk. It has definitely been a first to have a roommate who devotes time each day to meditation. Eric (my other summer roommate), Cullum, myself, and some of the Chinese teaching staff at Cornel took one of the teachers’ cars and drove to a small town in the mountains to visit the “Summit Resort” for the afternoon. It was about a 45-minute drive to visit this place that is relatively in the middle of nowhere. Despite it’s appearance, the Resort is not some sort of historical or culturally significant place. It was built only recently, and serves as more of a botanical garden than a resort …
