
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Datong, China by TravelPod blogger Mickeymo titled “That’s a Big Buddha!” Mickeymo’s travel blog entry: “Tuesday (09 Jun 09) morning I found my way by subway to the train station to embark for Datong. Although most signs were in Chinese, the numbers are still the same so I was able to find my train without much trouble. My seat was one of a group of 6 that sat 3 facing 3. There was a nice older woman at the window across from me with what I suspect was her granddaughter across from her, 2 younger people in the middle seats and a woman about my age across from me. No one spoke any English. The nice older woman pointed to where I should put my luggage and that I could place my snacks and water on the small table in front of her. The scenery between Beijing and Datong is very unappealing. In plain terms it reminds me of ‘the pit’ (Melfort reference… not the water pit but the gravel pit). It’s sand and clay, dry, dusty, heaps of power lines with very few trees. There are some ‘mountains’ in the distance but they are not attractive as they look like earth was excavated from somewhere, piled there and grass sprouted. Trees have been planted along side the railroad tracks as well as the roads… I suspect for a few reasons: a) to prevent the dust from blowing (the Gobi Desert in Mongolia borders northern China); b) as part of the Kyoto Accord; and, c) to block the ugly view!
