We’re just back in Guilin after a couple of days to the Longji Rice Terraces a bit further North. This area (another national park with tolls and tourists) is famous for its scenic terracing of the rice fields, and the numerous minority cultures that survive in the local villages nearby. Most of the info and wisdom that we can impart on the area is best done courtesy of the photos that we’ve taken – pictures speaking ’000s of words and all that. The place was magical, and the scenery was breathtaking (as I have said about many of the other places we’ve visited I’m sure) – We unfortunately timed our visit with the last few days of the Chinese national holiday, so we were probably subject to rather more tourists than usual, but the landscape did more than compensate. We took a couple of buses to get there, and walked up the last part of the way to reach the town that we planned to stay at in the centre of the area (Ping ‘An). There were several hawkers that plagued us throughout our stay there. The first that we saw were those manning sedan chairs to take Chinese tourists up the steep inclines to the village (read what Tamsin said about the national holidays and the proletariat in the last pod).
