Professor Lee dropped me off at Taipei’s Main Railway Station in time for my 9:25 departure. I had a first-class ticket (commensurate with my social standing – he he) for the 2 hour and 15 minute ride. The cost for a one-way ticket was about NT0, or approximately US. The train was very comfortable and I managed to doze off for about an hour due to my utter exhaustion. Arrived to a sweltering Hualien just before noon and set off looking for a hotel. After looking at several that were out of my budget (ie over 25 bucks a night), I settled on a completely adequate, comfortable one for NT0 (US$ 21) a night. They were initially asking NT0 a night but I bargained them down a bit – as one is expected to do in such circumstances. The hotel is comparable in quality to what one would find in a provincial capital in Thailand for the same price. Most of the hotels here cost twice as much on average, but with a little searching, it was possible for me to dig up this gem.
