I went up to Mt. Hehuan to enjoy the snow but instead, my car broke down on the Hehuan Pass above 3000m. I had no money on me but was fortune enough to find a kind person to tow my car over the steep Pass. Hehuanshan is located in central northeast Taiwan, and stands between Hsioulin Township in Hualien County and Renai Township in Nantou County. Hehuanshan reaches elevations of 3417m at its Main Peak, 3422m North Peak, 3421 East Peak. It is also the west gateway to the magnificent Taroko Gorge and the Grand Chilaishan (Mt Chilai~3607m). Hehuanshan is the most popular High mountain recreational destination in Taiwan. It is not just its alpine beauty, snow, meadows of miniature bamboo grass and rhododendron that makes it so popular but probably the fact that it can be reached by almost anyone via a good bitumen road which crosses the Island west to east (Central Cross-Island Highway). This road passes between the Main and East peaks at an elevation of 3275m, which makes it the highest bitumen main road and mountain pass in Taiwan, however, the highest road is actually the small paved road that runs almost to the top of the Main peak. The highway is usually closed during heavy winter frost or snowfalls, which have the potential to freeze any misfortunate stranded motorist etc to their deaths, however, this does not deter the thousands of motorist who rush like crazy to get to Kunyang car park or Wuling car park.
