So we left on Sunday afternoon for Hong Kong airport for a short trip to Taipei. We took a van to get into Hong Kong and Liz and I were supposed to be on an earlier flight than Mike. When we got to the airport we found out that the flight was overbooked and they told us to come back in 15 minutes and they should have a seat for us. We were in desperate need of food and we found the fastest food that we could…that wound up being Popeye’s Chicken. We dominated two orders of fried chicken and french fries in 10 minutes and then quickly got back to the ticket counter. At that time we were told that we couldn’t get on the flight and they would put us on Mikes flight two hours later. Liz said “I think iI want to go throw up so I can eat some decent food”…she didn’t actually do that, but we did go to a steak place and Mike and I each ate a steak. It wasn’t really a concern as the hotel itself doesn’t have dining facilities, so they give you a voucher for the local KFC instead. We made our way back to the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Food Court and helped ourselves to some Kaya toast, which was divine! When we arrived we were a bit surprised to find that the staff bowed for us as we entered! As we made our way down the escalator we had another couple of staff bow and then rush back to their stands. At this point we realised the store must have only just opened, despite it being 11am, and it wasn’t just for us! After breakfast we had a mooch around the clothes stores in the building but only found one jumper at £50, which was a complete no-no! We spent the morning wandering around the streets of Taipei. We were initially heading towards an area known as “Japan town” but we never found anything that was obviously meant to be that area. Taipei was a bit of a struggle in that it’s not yet really set up for western tourists. It made it difficult to find places and particularly, to find food. There was an obvious lack of westerners, to the point that I started counting them, well, I started looking for them first! The Taiwanese are amazing helpful and friendly …
