ZHANG: Heavy snowfall is blanketing large parts of China. A cold weather front from Siberia has made temperatures in the north plunge to a deep freeze. STORY: The extreme cold-weather front has brought the coldest temperatures this year to China. It’s forecast to last three to five days. Snow blanketed large swathes of the country this morning with temperatures hitting as low as minus twenty-five degrees Celcius in north-eastern Liaoning Province. Most areas outside of Tibet are said to be affected by the sudden change in weather. Temperatures in southwestern Sichuan province, which was hit by a devastating earthquake on May 12, plummeted to below freezing during the night. Hundreds of thousands of people are still living in temporary houses or even tents. Some still lack basic supplies like blankets and food. Media report an estimated 3400 people stranded on blocked expressways after two days of snow in the restive northwestern region of Xinjiang, home to minority Uighurs. Temperatures in northern Inner Mongolia and Gansu Province have plunged by about 18 degrees Celsius as snowstorms hit the area, endangering livestock. In Beijing, temperatures also plunged about 10 degrees overnight to minus 3 Celsius. Twenty-three provinces have already issued emergency weather warnings. The worst snowstorms in 50 years hit southern China in January and February this year affecting millions, bringing down power lines and paralyzing much of the usually mild south.
