This was the earliest I think I had left a hotel so far on this trip (excluding my ridiculous departure time from Seoul). I had booked my tour with Edison Tours, through my hotel. The tour was heading north to see Keelung and the Yehliu Geological Park. I’d chosen this tour rather than any of the city tours because I thought it might be nice to get out of a city for some fresh air. The tour bus arrived on time and my mad tour guide, Ruth, loaded me on the mini-bus. I was first on, and we then went round to another hotel to pick up a family of 4 and that was us done. The family were originally Vietnamese but now lived in Sydney – they had a curious Australian accent when they spoke in Chinese which made me chuckle to myself. We set off on the main highway up to Keelung – the major international port in Taiwan. It was not a long drive in terms of distance but the traffic was a bit suspect. Ruth never stopped talking the whole way there, and it was nice because she actually got us all involved in talking too so we were having a right old laugh by the time we arrived at our first port of call – the Jhongjheng Temple, home of the Great White Buddha.
