It appeared to have rained prior to our arrival which was nice since it cooled the weather down a bit. Since we arrived at 9:45 in the morning instead of later in the day (if we had taken the train), we had to leave our luggage at the hotel and start our sight-seeing early since check-in time wasn’t until 1:00. John and I headed over to the Hanoi Hilton, famous for housing American pilots that were shot down during the war (John McCain was held here when he was captured). Most of the original prison is gone as a hotel has taken up a huge chunk of land the prison used to be on. Regardless, what was left of the prison was still enough for me to imagine how horrible it was. I couldn’t stand being there for too long because it was quite eery to stand in rooms where hundreds of prisoners were once kept, tortured and some ultimately executed. We left the prison after about 45 minutes and headed over to Hoan Kiem Lake. It’s a nice looking lake and since the weather wasn’t as hot, John and I sat on one of the benches around the lake to take pictures and take in the scenery. Coming here again in winter is quite different as my stay here last summer, as the coastal winds are both cold and strong, but people are scarce and the winter atmosphere makes for beautiful scenes. The pictures of the coast speak pretty much for themselves, so I have nothing to add there. There are quite a few nice haunts along the coast to sip your poison of choice and reflect on one’s paltry presence in this plane of existence before continuing your travels. Furthermore, whenever I’m in Qingdao I’m compelled to consume large quantities of seafood. Attached is a picture of the dish I ate during my stay and it was absolutely fabulous. On the downside, it took a high fever, a sleepless night, the three following days, injections and medicine to deal with the food poisoning. It was a really nice fish though. An older, local resident of Qingdao shared his dinner and a few beers with me. Apparently, somewhere in another era he responded to Mao’s appeal and was part of the ????(zh?shi q?ngnián; educated youth), sent down to the countryside to educate compatriots in the countryside. He told stories of times almost totally forgotten by most of …
