The a trip on the Tazara Train however is just one of those things you have to do in your lives! It is far from luxury… an African passenger train with a few sleeper carts. The sleeping cabins have 2 beds each with a Bunk above them, it has a dining carriage, dingy toilets, cold showers… but it also has a ton of character and carves through one of the most amazing train routes in the world, passing through 2 countries and 3 internationally acclaimed game reserves. The Tazara was built by the Chinese in the 1970′s, as part of their ‘strengthening international solidarity’ strategy. 5000 Chinese were imported to build the railway which was completed a year ahead of schedule after a 5 year construction period. It is China’s biggest legacy from that era and is still quoted as one of the best examples of China’s aid to Africa — It’s success over the past few years may well be one of the key reasons why China continue to invest heavily in African infrastructure. Besides the game reserves, the train passes through no less than 22 tunnels, 320 bridges and covers a total distance of 1860km from Dar es Salaam to New Kapiri Mposhi. I have joined …
