After a leasurely breakfast of bought Danping ( pancake with egg ) and doutiang ( tofu milk ) on my terrace I take a look at the village I saw yesterday. When I arrive it turns out to be the ghost town I thought it would be, not a soul. Houses made from stones and wood partially restored, partially crumbled, sitting on the edge of a bay and cliff. That is somewhat the character of Tungchu – a remote, scarcely inhabited island, full of charm. I continue my way to the harbor via the south coast, the way I took yesterday. I meet the same lonely guard soldier again, although this time he is not so lonely, but in company of a comrade. We three chat a bit about my next steps, then I walk the few hundret meters to the Tapu Stone Engraving [ it is a memorial to a general in the Ming dynasty who fought off pirates without losing one soldier ]. With 15 minutes delay I arrive in Fuao harbor of Nankan island. I have a quick lunch and then walk in western direction to a budget hostel called Lianjiang near Matsu village, nicely described in Lonely Planet.
