I was jarringly reminded this past weekend. “Ohhh yeah – that’s right – NOW I remember” We accompanied a couple of Canadian co-teachers from our school, Ryan and Liz, to the acclaimed Pingxi Lantern Festival. Traditionally held on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the new year it marks the end of the New Year festivities. The journey there was an event alone. We scootered to the High Speed Rail Station in Jhubei and caught a train to Taipei Central Station from where we caught the subway (MRT) to the Taipei zoo. After queuing in the welcome afternoon heat, we caught a bus to Pingxi, which is a gloriously scenic little town, high up in the central mountains. The woman in the seat beside me lolled against my shoulder in a sleepy, head jerking, daze as we pointed out and remarked on all the fallen lanterns that had flamed out and dropped from the sky. It is not difficult to believe that this visually stunning event can cause big problems as burning, paper lanterns careen to earth.
