However, our friend/colleague Chung-Hsien, who is a professor at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, was nice enough to invite us there to visit as his guests. So, we dropped off the rental car (much to Chad’s disappointment – he was really getting used to Taiwanese method of driving) and hopped on a train. Four hours later, we were in Tainan, which is in the southern part of the country, a few kilometers from the west coast. When we stepped off the train, we found out that THIS was the Taiwan heat and humidity everyone was talking about. The stickiness hit us within moments. Chung-Hsien and his wife were nice enough to meet us at the train station and show us to our room at the guest house, which was beautiful! This university guest house was like a 4 or 5-star hotel in the US, with a big room, a stylish modern decor and all the amenities. After getting settled we headed out to explore the city. Tainan definitely felt more cosmopolitan than the other smaller cities we’ve visited here. We spent much of the afternoon and evening ambling around the bustling streets, munching on yummy street food and slurping up fruit smoothies.
