I came to St. Petersburg last summer for a 1-month study stint and I stayed an extra few weeks to see Moscow and some small towns. Needless to say, it wasn’t long enough. Last summer I arrived at the end of May, so the weather was warm and the sun never fully set – the famous “White Nights” of St. Petersburg. I did all the touristy things: visited all the major museums like the Hermitage and Russian Museum, took tours, ate Russian food, and even made a few Russian friends. I finished my beginner Russian class and my Russian politics class and did a little in-country traveling. Now I have been studying Russian for a month at St. Petersburg State University, and I will be here until next June. The classes are really great, as I have learned more Russian in a month than I did in a year of study; it also puts it all in perspective and allows me ample practice time – 24/7 practice time to be exact. My class consists of people from Germany, Sweden, Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, and the US The school has people from all corners of the world, including the Middle East, and being able to interact with such a diverse crowd is an amazing experience in itself.
