A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Honolulu, United States by TravelPod blogger Shellandmatt titled “Honolulu – The Return…..” Shellandmatt’s travel blog entry: “So we arrived back in Honolulu after spending 6 days in Maui. In some ways it was good to get back to Honolulu as its a little cheaper to stay but it was still sad to leave Maui as its a great place to just laze on the beach with little or no crowds. We arrived at the Ohana Beachcomber which is just 300 paces to the beach (so they claim, i didn’t check) checked our bags and guess what? went down the beach. Waikiki beach was packed but we didn’t care so we found a spot, laid out the towels and soaked up some more sun. A perfect spot to finish another book and watch the world go by. That night we went down Chinatown for an early celebration of Chinese new year. We walked around a little following the noise and excitement of the Chinese dragons chasing fire crackers until we saw a pub that had its entire veranda covered with unexploded fire crackers. That caught our attention and so we went in and checked it out. The locals were very friendly and told us that later on the “dragons” will come inside the pub chasing away evil spirits and collecting one dollar bills. After breakfast we rode our rental bicycles through downtown and over to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, and it was pretty but I was cold and actually had goosebumps. I know this is Alaska, but it is June after all and I hoped it would be a bit warmer. The sky is overcast and gray which is part of the chill factor, but when the sun breaks through the clouds it is warm and feels wonderful. We make our way along the Coastal Trail, only getting lost once (which is quite an accomplishment on this simple and easy to follow route), and find ourselves at Earthquake Park. This is just a simple park with some displays and monuments describing the huge earthquake here in 1964 on Good Friday. Much of the coastline slid into the inlet, many lives, homes and businesses were lost, and streets in downtown Anchorage split and lifted several feet dividing the city and destroying the infrastructure. Tsunamis soon followed which created even more havoc. What a mess. According to the Richter Scale it was a 9.2 which is devastating, and the epicenter was 78 miles east of Anchorage and lasted over 5 minutes. Those of you who know me know how much I detest …
