And why for what amounted to barely 24 hours of potential sight-seeing time? Last year, I went to Hawaii with my family. The plane tickets were bought just before prices crashed, and my brother managed to get us rather large refunds in the form of United Airline vouchers. Since my voucher was worth a bit more than a plane ticket to Korea from Japan, I decided to cash it in that way. And since I’d never had much interest in visiting Korea (I had nothing against it, but could think of many other places I’d rather go to first), I thought that this was a perfect opportunity to go and test the waters. I was joined by my friend Eda, who is studying Korean and who thought a short weekend of shopping and eating spicy food sounded like a great idea. Being limited in my travel options — I had to take a United Airlines flight, of course, and I didn’t want to take much time off work — meant that I left Tokyo on Friday evening and was back on a plane at noon on Sunday. Since Eda’s flight left Narita half an hour after mine, we took the train together to go to the airport. I spent the ride sewing, as I hadn’t quite finished the dress I planned to wear the next day.
