There was still plenty of time to go visit Dujiangyan, a town near the epicenter of the earthquake. I packed up some clothes to donate, grabbed my camera, and started out the door. Nobody wanted to come with me. Everybody asked me to stay away from the area, but I had to see it for myself. I don’t have a road map yet, so all I had to go by was a map of Chengdu in a Lonely Planet Guide. In the northwest corner of the map, there is an arrow and the words “Dujiangyan 60 km.” I memorized the street name and left the book behind. Once I got out to the countryside, I still couldn’t find any signs for Dujiangyan, so I began to stop and ask locals for directions. Directions in Sichuanese are a little hard to understand, but I did okay by following hand gestures, down the road and to the right. At one point on the road close to Dujiangyan there was a checkpoint run by two policemen. It looked as if they were turning some cars around. We were charmed with the scenery.Mt.Emei is one of the “four famous mountains”in China. It lies about 168km from Chengdu? the capital of Sichuan Province. Before the tour of the holy mountain? it is important to obtain some inforation about the spread of Buddhism in China? Buddhism in Mt. Emei and its hiking routes.
