A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Deqin, China by TravelPod blogger Montgomeryr3 titled “Deqin (the real shangri-la) Part 1″ Montgomeryr3′s travel blog entry: “After an insane 7 hour bus trip that covered a 14292 foot pass (highest I’ve ever been), dirt roads, mud roads, swerving around recent landslides and rockfalls, rarely having a guard rail, all while constantly passing other buses, cars, yak herds, donkey herds, and the occasional eight year olds (boys and girls) working construction on the highway we finally arrived in Deqin (pronounced deh-cheen). There was one point where I looked out of the window while we were passing another huge bus in the rain on a curve on a mountain on a one lane road, and I noticed some of the back left tire of the bus was actually sticking out over the pavement. There was a sheer drop off of a couple of thousand feet before we would even hit anything on the way down. So we caught a cab to Fei Lai Si (pronounced Fay Lie Sue) a little village on the outskirts of Deqin. We immediately went to the Migratory Bird, a bar with a dude that spoke a little English, and had some drinks and looked at a map of the hiking possibilities. The village (one street of hostels and a couple of restaurants) was located at 11647 feet set on a 3000 foot cliff overlooking a village on the Mekong River and opposite the Meili Snow Mountain range composed of peaks from 18000 to 22100 feet.
