Best time to go to Yunnan Province by a long shot. Day one in Dali did not disappoint on this count. The journey from Kunming was pretty jaw dropping as this once caravan trail (no not the ones that get pulled by 4×4′s or old Rovers) has been turned into an expressway. People travelling this route 50 years ago would be amazed by what the engineers have acheived. On one hand it allows Dean and I to get to Dali in 5 hours on the other the intrusion of the road on this landscape is unbalanced and liable to need extensive maintenance for evermore. Ah progress with development……anyhow we used the road and arrived in Dali in glorious sunshine. My brother Henry (hello bro!) had been here two years ago and had spent a number days (maybe weeks here) and so we were ready to be impressed. We loved it at once. Our Hostel The Jade Emu is the best we’ve seen in a long time and so with check in sorted we ventured out to the old town. The streets within the old walls are cobbled with streams rushing down the sides and for some of the time they are mostly pedestrianised apart from the odd bike with trailer or moped – again a change from the rest of China so far.
