Entry from: Kunming, China Entry Title: “The Space Age” Entry: “I’m not sure how apparent it has been to all you people on the other side of the world, but this week China has been totally obsessed by all things outer space. At the weekend a Chinese astronaut conducted China’s first space walk and the TV has been showing wall to wall space coverage before, during and since. I feel like I am becoming something of an expert on China’s space programme having also experienced the hype around their first manned space flight back in 2003 when I was here last. Anyway, on this particular Shenzhou-7 mission, 3 astronauts spent 3 days in space during which they released a satellite and conducted a space walk before landing back in Inner Mongolia. As you can imagine, in a country with such a strong sense of national pride and the desire to prove itself on the world stage, this event really did make headline news, and created a few more national heros – see www.cctv.com if you want to see the story in its full gushing glory and check out all the “Thank the motherland and the people” style rhetoric. It did strike us over here as a bit bizarre though the angle that the international coverage on this event has taken.
