At the Cannes Film Festival all week, no Chinese films made the list to compete for the event’s top prize. But that doesn’t mean there is no Chinese presence there. Just like we said during the Beijing International Film Festival last month, the big trend in China’s film industry now is co-production. Media heavyweights Rupert Murdoch and former CEO of MGM Studios, Harry E Sloan, where on hand to help their respective partners, Wendi Deng Murdoch and Florence Low Sloan, at the launch of “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” at the Cannes International Film Festival on Monday. “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” is a tale of two parts. The first, set in 19th-century China, follows two young girls Snow Flower and Lily, who see their friendship tested by disapproving parents you want to keep the children apart. The second section takes place in present day Shanghai, where the descendants of Snow Flower and Lily, Nina and Sophia, struggle to make sense of their busy modern lives by interpreting secret messages shared between their ancestors hidden in the folds of silk fans. Among the promotion at Cannes Film festival are the leading actresses Li Bingbing, a household name in China. The actress found herself having to rise to the challenges posed by the Sino-American co-produced film.
