Entry from: Kunming, China Entry Title: “City of Eternal Spring” Entry: “Sources told me back in Yangshuo that the place to stay in Kunming is a hostel called the Hump. Named after a treacherous plane route over the 5000m Himalayan Ridge flown by US planes between 1942 and 1945 after the Japanese captured Lashio, a main town along the Burma Road being used to supply Chinese troop resisting the Japanese in Yunnan and Sichuan. As a result of this theme the decor is interesting and the staff (on the most part) are lovely. After Yangshuo, Kunming faced some tough competition. My expectations were high as the bar had been set by one of the most geographically astounding, atmospheric and enchanting towns I have ever visited. The first impression when I got off the train was a clean modern city, much like many other Chinese cities but not to be prejudice I held back my initial scepticism that Kunming may be another large unlivable metropolis. I was right to do so. Guangzhou has left an indelible mark which lingers still. The 2 hardest things about Kunming are navigation and ordering food. On the hoof navigation is easy, the streets are beautifully clean, modern and buzzing with people and street signs are better than some others I have seen.
