An outbreak of cholera in China’s southern resort island of Hainan has spread to the province’s capital Haikou, forcing the quarantine of a local university. Seven students at Hainan University in Haikou had been diagnosed with cholera, bringing total cases in the province to 51, says financial magazine Caijing on its website. An 8-year-old girl with the surname Zhao died in the emergency room at the First Peoples Hospital due to complications resulting from Cholera, according to the Epoch Times. No deaths have been reported on the province’s official website, and calls by Reuters to the provincial health bureau went unanswered. Cholera is transmitted by contaminated water or food. It causes diarrhea that can lead to death by severe dehydration and kidney failure.
