The flight to LA was long and tiring, with manky food and a **** film, bum deal. Touched down at 8.20pm, caught a free bus to the transit centre, a local bus to Santa Monica and was filling my face in McDonalds by about 11pm. I was done in. Got back to the dorm and crashed. I was staying in the YHA which was expensive at a night but it was worth it, it was a good hostel with decent bunks and lockers. Got up for a day of exploring which began at the Santa Monica pier. Felt like I was back in Blackpool. Had a look at the Carousel that starred in The Sting and made my way toward Venice down the beach. Before long, I figured it was too hot and too hazy so turned around to catch a bus and make a day of it in Hollywood. Got a day pass on the buses and spent the next 30 minutes scanning the city as we drove north east into the heat and haze of the smogfest that is LA. We’re beginning to think it’s all a conspiracy and they dont really exist! We’ve spent the last couple of weeks driving from San Francisco to LA, right along the California coast. The first big stop after SF was Santa Cruz where we spent a night. We checked out the Boardwalk which is a big amusement park right beside the beach, and also got to go to a midnight showing of The Goonies which was brilliant as we had seen all of the locations in Astoria! Chunk even turned up at the start to give out prizes to the mega-Goonies fans (of which there were a few – very strange people!) The next day we continued along the coast and saw more than a few surfers along the way. Santa Cruz is where the guy who invented the first wet suit and set up O Neills is from, so there are a LOT of sufers there. From Santa Cruz we headed to Monterey and Carmel. Both are nice towns, but the main attraction is the 17-mile drive which basically goes out along the coast and is owned by the Pebble Beach company. Not surprisingly the Pebble Beach golf course is there, along with about 10 other golf courses and some huge mansions. We …
