The great wall’s history stretches for thousands of years but can be broken down into easy terms. North of the plains on which Beijing now sits was once wild nomadic country. North of Beijing there are vast mountain ranges which make defense easier, but not in any way a good option. These mountains are not impassible, they simply make the task harder. Thus, to ensure protection from the nomadic hordes, the Ming Dynasty emperors began constructing a fixed fortification along traditional avenues of attacks.
